Musical Moods

Music and the Effects on your Mood

Upbeats, rhythms, melodies, tones, and beats all make up a musical composition. Is the song you are listening to slow, fast, a ballad, a rock song, sad, happy, romantic? Music is a form of expression, and artists often times express their feelings through song. They write songs when they are happy, sad, angry, and even when they are in love. Listening to the different types of songs can affect your mood.
If you are sad, you should listen to happy upbeat music to turn your mood around. If you are angry and need an outlet to release your feelings, you can listen to rock music with fast tempos and loud guitar playing. You can set the mood for a romantic evening with the one you love by playing soft ballads or love songs. Music can be a distraction to take your mind off of pressing issues or simply to entertain.

Music in its most simple form is to entertain. It is played for fun at parties, school dances, sporting events, at home, or while driving in your car. People listen to music in their cars while commuting to work to pass their time more enjoyably. It would be so boring to sit in a car for thirty minutes in complete silence. With the radio on, you can jam out to your favorite tunes or engage in a talk show. People listen to music while they need to pass time while at work or cleaning their house for example. It is a way to entertain them.
Music can set the tone for your day or night. When you wake up in the morning, listen to something upbeat to get your day going. It can put you in a better mood by listening to fun, happy music. Because music affects your mood, if you were to listen to slow songs in the mornings you might find it harder to wake up or be motivated to start the day. At night, when you are winding down or have had a stressful day at work or school, listen to music that will calm you. Slower beats, acoustic, or classical music can be very calming.
While planning a romantic dinner or evening at home with your loved one, you should play love songs or ballads. You can find an Internet Radio station that will have fewer commercials than on a traditional radio that won’t interrupt the flow of music or the mood you are trying to create. Listening to love music can spark emotions and have the ability to make you feel more connected to someone. Listening to love songs is a shared experience, and when you hear a particular love song you will think of the person you were with.
Listening to different types of music can affect your mood. If you listen to upbeat music you could feel happier and more energetic. While on the other hand, listening to slow music can make you feel sad or relaxed. Choose the right music that will affect the mood you want to be in.

How Music Affects Mood

Music affects everyone in different ways and more importantly, it affects people’s emotions.  Some may think that music may not play a large role in one’s mood but it often has a dramatic effect.  Interestingly enough, we tend to listen to music that reflects what mood we are in.  If we are happy, we listen to lively music and if one is sad, they listen to sad music.  People do this naturally and wonder why we turn to music in times of a mood booster. The big question is how does music affect our mood?

Music is what people turn to when they are in all kinds of moods.  It has been scientifically proven that music helps people feel less stressed, relaxed, and even motivated.  It can influence mood in either a positive or negative way. For example, Rap or Screamo music have more of a negative connotation which puts people in a bad mood. There is also positive music like alternative or pop.  These happy songs send brain waves and cause an elevation in your mood.  What happens when listening to enjoyable music is dopamine will be released, which is basically a “feel good” chemical.  This chemical is also involved with relaxation and motivation. Since listening to music releases dopamine, scientists have realized that music can help determine things such as human pleasure. “Music is going to be a useful tool in trying to explain all sorts of aspects of pleasure, addiction and maladaptive behaviors”.  -David Huron
Music does not only appeal to adults, but also to kids.  In the following video Dr. Anna Mendenhall and Renee Kohn discuss the affects of music on children.

As seen in the video, the key is that there are different kinds of music that alter a person’s mood. The only kind that has a negative effect is grunge.  Positive is proven to help with learning such a Baroque and other soft instrumental or classical music.  There are also ways that music can help with sleep problems.  Certain beats and rhythmic patterns can help people reach deep sleep and REM cycles.  Dr. Mendenhall also made a point that leaving music on during the night can help sleep cycles. It cannot be loud or harsh music but if it is soft, it will alter the person’s mood and help them sleep better.
This next video is a really interesting exercise.  There is a set of images played through the first half of the video with a certain song.  Then, the same set of images is played again with a different song. It really shows how the song being played influences your mood while viewing the images.

The first song played was kind of sad and made me feel sorry for the people I was seeing.  It gave off the vibe that those people were going through sad hard times.  When the second song played it made me feel a little sad still; however, it was more hopeful than depressing.  It was more uplifting and gave off the feeling that even though they may have been struggling, everything would be okay.  This is just one of many examples of how one’s mood can be changed by listening to music.
Studies have been done to prove that music does not only put people in good or bad moods, but it can put them in a motivated or relaxed mood.  People listen to music that reflects how they are feeling on the inside so in order for them to get motivated by music, they need to already feel a little motivated.  If one is not feelings motivated then the music will not help much because it is not what their internal state is.  Songs also have a way of relaxing and taking away stress.  When people sit down and listen to music, it lowers their heart rates and starts slower breathing. This helps go from a stressed busy mood to a relaxed one.
Music has many purposes and effects on people and they are all in different ways.  However, the one thing in common is how it can make people happier.  Sometimes it may not put someone in a happy mood, but it does have a major affect on their emotions. This is why music is such an amazing gift in everyone’s lives.  It has the power to make people the happiest in the matter of a few minutes.  Music is such an amazing thing and has the powerful affect to bring people together and be happy.

  3. Music is a fantastic and extraordinary medicine for those people who suffer from mental diseases. It is the cheapest medicine that they can receive. For patients that suffer from an obsessive and compulsive disorder, music it a great way to control them because these kind of persons spend at least 1 hour a day on the thoughts and rituals, which cause distress and get in the way of daily life. Music Therapy is just one of a number of alternative therapies that can be used alongside the more traditional routes to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. The right music has often been used to relax people and it is possible that, by playing music, anxiety levels can be reduced. My sister suffers from this disorder and her psychiatry prescribes her to listen to music at least 1 hour per day. He suggested the kind of music that makes her to forget her constant obsessive thoughts like salsa music, merengue and folk music, because this music gives her happiness and helps her to dance and be energetic. It is making a difference in her! Music can make a difference in many persons and in many ways. It is just to have an electronic device that can play music and the rest comes easily to your mind! The best medicine for your soul!

  4. "The only kind that has a negative effect is grunge". Well, about that comment, I want to say that the Grunge is not the only music genre that alters a person’s mood. It's a fact that there are genres that affect people in negative way, like metal and its derivatives, reggaeton, etc. Some people become aggressive or disturbed while hearing this type of music.

There are also musical genres that affect a person's mood in both, positive and negative way, that perhaps few imagine this or that song could be harmful. It depends on the situation the person is facing at the moment and the personality. For example, romantic music is really good for some people and for others is depressing.

Well, the same applies to the grunge, not so much the genre, but on the song, because there are songs of that genre that I love that make me happy and bring good memories to me. Everything depends on the meaning you give to the song.

Way back when chatting with a friend in her late thirties who was listening to dark metal, I asked her if it didn't affect her emotionally like me, and to my surprise she answered no. She said that the other songs she had heard in my mp3 player made her asleep and I laughed. Having said that, it's clear that the impact each song has depends on the personality.
